Among other projects in the works out here in Montucky, we've got Dump Bush: The Red State Rebellion. The plan is for a large rally down in Caras Park, which played host to an anti-war rally of about 2,000 people during the build-up to the Iraq War (that was a mostly local affair), Dump Bush is expecting a statewide crowd and will likely garner it. We're thinking as many as 5,000 people - which is pretty sizeable in a state with fewer than a million.
And what, pray tell, is the basic theory here? Well, in part, it is what Matthew Yglesias and Ezra Klein are talking about. The Bush Administration is so far out of whack that otherwise liberal-but-independent and moderate-reach-across-the-aisle-Democrats are feeling the urge to become violently opposed to the Administration. Both Ezra and Matt are hawkish Democrats and both get nervous with far left portions of our party. And it isn't just them freaking out and realizing that this Presidency isn't even held together by an intense ideology any more.
Increasingly, in hindsight, it is clear that our War on Iraq, which we never claimed to fight for humanitarian reasons until after the game had already started, was not even really part of the war on terror, for as has been noted widely, the war on terror is really a war on Islamic fundamentalism. Iraq was a lot of things, but dominated by Islamic fundamentalism was not a part of it.
Bush went to war in Iraq because he has a long distrust of their country (fair enough, they tried to kill his Dad, I'd be pissed to). No evidence of a lack of WMDs or of anything else would have changed a damn thing. They packaged the war so that people thought Iraq=al Qaeda and then planted the vote right before the election to scare the Hell out of the Democrats.
They have lied and I mean straight up lied (not like their misleading statements on foreign policy) on economic issues from day one.
This Administration is sickening and it has strengthened the Democratic Party in a way that the Party never could have on its own. When you see people like MY and EK up in arms, it is not because they lapsed into the realm of irrationality. We cannot be described as lunatic and over-the-top. This Administration is so recklessly dangerous, the long-term implications are unfathomable. If you're not pissed off, it's because you're not paying attention.
Oh, so go to Dump Bush and join the Red State Rebellion.
